Asphalt Quality Control Technician

MAIN FUNCTION:  To assist the Director of Quality Control by performing various quality control tests on assorted materials.    

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Obtain random samples from stockpiles, trucks, and other environments (requires shoveling, climbing stairs and ladders to reach truck bodies, and lifting samples in excess of 90 lbs).

 

  • Operate scientific equipment including, but not limited to, digital scales, analog meters, platform scales, sieving equipment, computers, digital ovens, density gauges, compaction equipment, etc. in the performance of quality control testing procedures and development of asphalt mixes.

 

  • Perform calculations to develop an analysis of and record data on samples and testing procedures.

 

  • Store and retrieve data and samples (requires shoveling, climbing and handling of samples).

 

  • Communicate test results to superiors.

 

  • Work independently and in a timely manner.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Clean equipment and work area.

  • Assist plant personnel as requested.

  • Perform other duties as instructed by Supervisor.

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Strong background in sciences, mathematics, and statistics preferred.  Computer experience necessary.  The applicant will be sent to training programs as needed for performance of job.  These will include, but not be limited to, Troxler, Superpave, the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Delaware Department of Transportation, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Must be able to perform physical labor indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.  Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.  Random drug testing is performed monthly.

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:  This position is located in a laboratory at a hot mix asphalt facility.  Since the company has two such facilities and two main laboratories occasional travel to the other plants may be necessary.  Position requires valid Class D Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Must work in all kinds of weather; job includes indoor and outdoor work; long hours and occasional weekends required.
