Asphalt Distributor/ Tack Truck Driver

 

About Us:

We are a Heavy/Highway General Contractor based in Chestertown Maryland. The Company owns and maintains a fleet of over 300 pieces of equipment used in the construction of utilities (sewer, water, storm drain), earthmoving, and asphalt paving with several gravel pits and two asphalt plants.

 

About the Role:

Our Asphalt Distributor/ Tack Truck Drivers are responsible for efficiently operating an asphalt distributor and maintaining an acceptable level of workmanship to support the asphalt paving crews at various job sites including roadways, parking lots, and driveways.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operates the Asphalt Distributor/ Tack Truck/ Dump Truck and other equipment in a safe manner.

  • Perform daily maintenance of equipment.

  • Perform minor repairs to the equipment and assist in the general operation of each job site.

  • Perform regular cleaning and upkeep of the tack truck to ensure its optimal performance.

  • Keep records of material or equipment usage and problems encountered. \

  • Assist with additional duties when the tack truck is not in use like shoveling, brooming, and picking.

  • Transports and delivers materials

  • Demonstrate familiarity with the safe operation of construction and paving equipment.

  • Conduct daily safety checks of fluid levels (oil, water, fuel), and inspect for leaks and damage prior to operating the vehicle.

 

Requirements:

  • Possession of a current Maryland Class A Commercial and Class C/D driver's license required

  • Candidate must have tanker endorsement

 

Education Requirements:

  • One to three years of heavy equipment operation experience; or, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved

  • Ability to understand work directions and effectively communicate with job site supervisors and fellow employees

 

Preferred Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) (preferred)

  • Demonstrable previous experience as a Tack Truck Driver (preferred)

  • Industry-related experience, with a focus on roads, highways, and bridges (preferred)

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant physical effort, including standing for extended periods

  • Ability to move and position your body in positions as necessary to fulfill job duties, inclusive of: Kneeling, Stooping, Bending, Crouching, Bending or Twisting, Standing and walking, Climbing

  • Lift and carry items weighing 50+ pounds

  • Remain alert to multiple concurrent activities on the construction site, including the movement of equipment and other employees.

  • Walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground, in varying weather conditions.

  • Ability to physically work and/ or drive for extended hours of time

  • Applicants must be able to perform heavy physical labor outdoors in all types of weather, specifically high heat.

  • Ability to physically operate a variety of heavy construction trucks, equipment, controls, and tools over highways and on construction sites

  • Ability to ascend and descend up to 40 inches from the ground into cabs

  • Candidates may be given a medical examination to determine their physical ability to perform the job.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test and continue to pass random monthly drug testing

 

Working Environment:

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat

  • Exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typically associated with construction projects

  • Proximity to heavy equipment and moving machinery

  • Potential exposure to various substances found on construction sites or equipment shops, such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt

  • Working conditions include restricted movement, intense noise, extreme temperatures, a dirty environment, and possible night work

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Notification of Traffic Violation: The Commercial Motor Safety Act of 1986 requires that commercial drivers notify their employer and state that issued their license of all moving violations, including those committed in a personal vehicle, for which the driver forfeited collateral or was convicted within 30 days after the conviction.
